Artist Statement

Our daily lives are filled with events, emotions, and mind-scapes that churn, float, and race along like the weather tracking on a radar map. There are moments of spacious peace, tangled seasons of despair, raucous times of joy, and darkness of loss that teach us and help us evolve and grow in our human journeys. My work aims to capture these specific often nebulous moments of time to prove we are ALL “works in progress;” learning and improving every day. We make mistakes and learn to forgive ourselves. We can recognize the beauty of each day despite our struggles and know that it all adds up to a life well-lived. We were perfectly made and opportunity is always rolling in to help us show our greatness. It’s never over until it’s over. I use acrylic, gouache, pencil, and ink on canvas or clayboard panels in energetic expressive strokes using fevered colors and marks to form clusters that act as the “happenings” in our lives. I use lines and shapes that evoke botanical elements like flowers, stems, and leaves to represent our constant rebirthing and wilting. I like to use riotous color choices to create the energy of empowerment in the painting; a sense and statement of strength and triumph over hardship. I use areas of calm open space to represent the calmness and stillness that surround our every day happenings; sometimes monotonous and sometimes exquisitely healing. Each panel is a chance for the viewer to reflect on the many seasons they have weathered and come away feeling seen, heard, and validated.

Welcome!

Megan Carty describes her abstract expressionist paintings as “visual poems that illustrate the human lived experience.” Our inner-beings are both beautiful AND flawed. In our lives’ journeys, we experience celebrations, achievements, love, and joy. In contrast, we also experience losses, injustices, abuses, and sadness. We are both given TO and taken FROM. Carty aims to document this dichotomy of random moments in time using specific colors, open space, and line. She pulls her mark making inspiration from plants and flowers, as they are the ultimate symbols of continuous growth, death, and renewal.
